Abandoned Property Websites exist to help people locate lost assets. For example, you may have a dividend that paid to a closed account. Another example is a bank account you opened to get a mortgage but forgot about over the years.

Have fun seeing if you have some lost money! During the COVID quarantine, who couldn’t use a bit of found money?
How did the money get to these sites? Property in inactive accounts is turned over to the state. Each state has created an abandoned property department whose core responsibility is managing these assets in the hope that the rightful owner returns. If someone claims the money, the department’s job is to return the asset to the claimant. That is, return it as long as the claimant can prove they are the rightful owner.
